To mark 100 year’s since the birth of David Lean, the Academy screened his 1970 classic, Ryan’s Daughter.

On Tuesday 25 March the Academy welcomed guests and members to watch David Lean’s classic 1970 film Ryan’s Daughter. Screened in 70mm format the special event was part of a year of Centenary events celebrating the birth of David Lean in Croydon on 25 March 1908.

A fitting choice for such an auspicious date, Ryan’s Daughter was written by Robert Bolt and is set in Ireland during World War One. The film garnered a Directors' Guild Award for Lean and Oscars for John Mills (Best Supporting actor) and Freddie Young (Best Cinematography).

The evening was introduced by Academy Board member Nik Powell and Trustee of the David Lean Foundation, Anthony Reeves, followed by a guest appearance from the star of the film, Sarah Miles.

Preceded by a Taittinger Champagne and canapé reception the rare screening was made possible with the support of Warner Brothers in Burbank and the careful work of the projection team at 195 Piccadilly.
