Director, BAFTA Scotland

The Academy now seeks a new Director for BAFTA Scotland to lead its Scottish branch into the next phase of its development.
The Director will be responsible for managing BAFTA Scotland’s programme of screenings and events, including the annual BAFTA lecture at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Scottish Students on Screen and New Talent Awards and the Scottish film and television industry’s main Awards ceremony, the BAFTA Scotland Awards. The Director should also have ideas and the ability to help BAFTA expand its activities throughout Scotland with new and unique events. These events should be aimed at educating the public as well as inspiring the industry.
The Director will be self-motivated, able to inspire staff and others around them, and also able to work with and service an elected committee. The Director should also be experienced in fundraising and able to work with and manage sponsorship relationships. The Director will work closely with the senior executive of BAFTA in London and its committees to develop a common strategy for BAFTA across the UK.
Knowledge of the media industries in Scotland and the UK would be helpful but not essential. We are looking for someone who is able to take BAFTA Scotland forward and make it relevant to everyone in Scotland who goes to the cinema, watches television or plays a video game!
JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose
The Director of BAFTA Scotland will help BAFTA expand its activities in its main task of celebrating excellence in the screen, television and new media arts.
The Director will be responsible for organising a programme of screenings; other events including the annual BAFTA lecture at the Edinburgh International Film Festival; the Scottish Students on Screen and New Talent Awards; and managing the Scottish film and television industry’s main Awards ceremony, the BAFTA Scotland Awards. The Director will also help BAFTA expand its activities throughout Scotland with new and different events. These events should be aimed at educating the public as well as the industry.
The Director will work with the elected officers of BAFTA Scotland and service an elected committee.
The Director will be required to be involved in fundraising and be able to work, and manage important relationships, with sponsors.
The Director will work closely with the COO and Chief Executive of BAFTA UK and its committees to develop a common strategy for BAFTA across the UK.
Key responsibilities
1. To lead the development and implementation of the policy and strategy of the BAFTA Scotland Committee and to work with BAFTA nationally to deliver a programme of events which fulfils the aims of the charity;
2. To manage the BAFTA brand in Scotland through:
a. Managing and developing the existing BAFTA Scotland events programme;
b. Looking to develop other events either as Scotland-only events or in conjunction with BAFTA UK;
c. Working with and servicing the existing BAFTA Scotland Committee which meets regularly in Glasgow to determine policy;
d. Working with the COO and Chief Executive of BAFTA UK to ensure a common strategy for the charity across the UK;
e. Contributing to the development of the organisation and its ambitions;
f. Recruiting and maintaining the relationship with BAFTA Scotland members;
g. Actively seeking sponsorship funding for BAFTA Scotland and managing sponsor relationships.
h. Leading the effective presentation of the organisation in Scotland. This includes responsibility for all corporate communications, events and activities and will involve consultation with the elected officials of BAFTA Scotland, the BAFTA Scotland Committee and committees of BAFTA UK;
i. Proactively developing partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders including Scottish Screen, Scottish and UK Broadcasters, Cineworld and other key Scottish bodies like the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Visit Scotland, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, PACT, Skillset, local enterprise companies, local film offices, industry, UK Film Council, Regional Screen Agencies, unions, guilds, local authorities and other economic, cultural, and business development agencies and bodies and others;
j. In conjunction with the elected treasurer of BAFTA Scotland, being responsible for the finances, the setting and management of the annual budget and bank accounts of the branch;
k. Managing the full time staff of BAFTA Scotland and the staff additionally hired for specific events;
l. Ensuring that there is effective communications between BAFTA UK, BAFTA Scotland, the BAFTA Scotland Committee and the membership of BAFTA Scotland;
m. In conjunction with BAFTA UK, running and maintaining the BAFTA Scotland website.
Specific responsibilities
1. Strategy
a. Lead the devising and implementation of BAFTA Scotland’s strategies and activities with the BAFTA Scotland Committee;
b. Lead the devising and implementation of BAFTA Scotland’s communication strategies and activities;
c. Determine the meeting schedule of the BAFTA Scotland Committee a year in advance and service and report to that committee;
d. Ensure that all screenings and all other events are organised and communicated to members and other interested parties;
e. Ensure the timely preparation of reports and other information for BAFTA Scotland Committee meetings and report to BAFTA UK on BAFTA Scotland activities;
f. Co-ordinate with BAFTA UK on events and other activities which can be shared and promoted in Scotland;
g. Where required attend BAFTA UK meetings;
h. Manage information emanating from the organisation, including overall management of the website.
2. Partnerships
a. Proactively develop partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders including Scottish Screen, Scottish and UK Broadcasters, Cineworld and other key Scottish Bodies like the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Visit Scotland, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, PACT, Skillset, local enterprise companies, local film offices, industry, UK Film Council, Regional Screen Agencies, unions, guilds, local authorities and other economic, cultural, and business development agencies and bodies and others;
b. Actively seek sponsorship funding for BAFTA Scotland and manage sponsor relationships.
3. Communications
a. Identify key profile-raising opportunities and mechanisms to demonstrate the impact of BAFTA Scotland’s work;
b. Ensure all print and other promotional materials are designed, produced and disseminated as appropriate;
c. Ensure all BAFTA Scotland events are managed effectively to promote the work of BAFTA Scotland as part of the organisation’s communications strategy.
Demonstrable Skills, Knowledge and Experience
1. The ability to manage an organisation which has charitable status and which is responsible to a combination of an elected committee and a London management structure;
2. Experience of organising large scale events and event co-ordination;
3. Experience of fundraising and sponsor management;
4. Experience of managing the communications function within a medium sized company, including marketing, public relations, publicity, event management, network development and working across the organisation in identifying communications needs;
5. Line management experience;
6. Project management experience;
7. Development experience within the media and/or the creative industries;
8. Knowledge of convergent digital media, including film, television and interactive;
9. Wide industry contacts and knowledge;
10. Network development;
11. Demonstrable partnership building across public and private sectors;
12. Financial and budgetary management;
13. Experience of initiating and leading innovative projects, and monitoring and evaluating outcomes and acting on them appropriately;
14. IT literacy;

16. Experience of overseeing the production of relevant print materials;
